Job Description
Duties of a field instructor include leading groups in multi-day hiking expeditions and outings that combine an academic curriculum, primitive living and outdoor skills, service learning and volunteer work.
Instructors also lead adventure activities that includes mountain biking, rock climbing, canoeing and rafting, horseback riding, snow shoeing and cross country skiing.

Achievements
All instructors are trained in primitive wilderness skills such as traps, shelters, and how to build a fire using the Bow Drill method.
Instructors also receive training on techniques for recognizing problem behaviors and patterns in adolescents, and how to promote strong communication and coping skills. These training sessions are taught by a licensed therapist before of the start of each shift. |
BenefitsPay scale ranges from $1,500-$2,500 for every 2-week shift completed, depending on your experience as an instructor within the program.
After 3 completed shifts you are considered a full-time employee, and are eligible for insurance benefits. Each 2-week shift is spent camping in the Idaho desert. You must provide your own gear, and all meals are provided. |
QualificationsInstructors must be at least 21 years of age with a high school diploma or GED.
While not required, previous experience in backcountry living/travel, winter camping and outdoor adventure activities is preferred. |
